Abstract:

This report summarizes activity for the period from 1 August 1977 to 31 March 1978 during a 6-phase program aimed at developing and validating procedures for the repair of large-area damage to various graphiteepoxy and graphite-boronepoxy primary and secondary structures. The effort focuses on repair concepts that supply nearly complete structural restoration to the damaged part, including the effects of temperature, moisture, and fatigue, while at the same time being amenable to military depot implementation. Specific information contained in this report includes activities for Phase III - Component Selection and Repair Procedures Development, Phase IV - Repair Implementation, and Phase V - Repair Evaluation and Verification. Phase III efforts addressed the design, analysis, fabrication, moisture conditioning, and structural testing of repair concepts specifically configured to be applicable to the B-1 and F-16 aircraft, and scale-up tests of flush and external repairs. Under Phase IV, large-scale component fabrication, damage removal, repair, and cost analyses were conducted. Phase V work included full-scale static test validation of a flush off-aircraft repair for lightly-loaded graphiteepoxy-faced sandwich structures. Author
