Abstract:

An investigation of the stability of models of the jettisonable sections of the D-558 airplanes was conducted in the Langley 20-foot-spinning tunnel. It was found that both model nose sections tumbled end over end about an approximately horizontal axis. The installation of suitable fins, together with sufficient forward location of the center of gravity, prevented the tumbling and caused the models to descend in a stable nosedown attitude.
