Abstract:

This report describes the results of an 18 month research program in which reactions and energy transfer processes involving excited NCla1 Delta were investigated. The work included three projects. In the first of these, high densities 10exp 15cu cm of NCla1 Delta were produced by photodissociation of CIN3, and excited I5 sup 2 P 12 atoms were generated by a subsequent energy transfer process. The data suggest that a population inversion on the I5 sup 2p 32 - I5 sup 2 P 32 transition was achieved, but the inversion density was insufficient to reach laser threshold in the optical cavity employed. In the second project, rate constants for collisional quenching of NCla1 Delta by a number of atoms and diatomic molecules were measured. In the third project, the production of NCla1 Delta by the H NC12 reaction was investigated in a continuous transverse-flow reactor, at high reagent densities.
