ARMY BALLISTIC RESEARCH LAB ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND MD
A simple model was used to predict combat induced fires of flammable components except ammunition carried on combat vehicles. Five U.S. Army ground vehicles were examined. Eight attacking weapons were considered. Fuel temperatures from 8 C to 53 C were included. The model was based as much as possible on existing data which simply did not cover all situations of interest. Considerable personal judgment was required. Nevertheless, the importance of certain vehicle properties include engine design, fuel cell location, vehicle material and the presence of an automatic fire suppression system.
