Abstract:

This study first examines the postulated characteristics of the modern battlefield and then proposes several close air support skill and knowledge requirements based upon the expected battlefield characteristics. The study next investigates the training requirements established in the current USAF close air support training program, TACM 51-50. A comparison between the close air support battlefield requirements and the current program reveals a lack of emphasis on joint training. The study also highlights several factors inhibiting unit accomplishment of the training programs. Mitigation of these factors is possible through centralized management of training program execution. Currently existing supervisory agencies are capable of assuming the execution management function. Author
