Abstract:
A method of measuring atmospheric extinction of radiation along a 13.3 kilometer path in the marine boundary layer has been devised and demonstrated. The design allows for selective measurement of extinction from the visible to the far infrared wavelengths. Two greybody sources, one covering the visible and near infrared and the other covering all bands out to the far infrared were each mounted on reflecting telescopes which were used to project the radiation. A reflecting telescope with selectable detectors was employed as the receiver. Two feasibility trials were conducted and the equipment was successfully calibrated. Author
