Corporate Author:
OPERATIONAL RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS ESTABLISHMENT OTTAWA (ONTARIO)
Report Date:
1978-11-01
Abstract:
Mussolinis ruthless use of armour and poison gas to defeat spear-wielding Ethiopians, Emperor Haile Selassies unprecedented reception at the League of Nations, startling disclosures regarding Soviet military facilities in Somalia, the formation of a Marxist government in Addis Ababa, Cuban troops in Ogaden counter-offensive, and the ejection of Soviet forces from Somalia were sensational events which captured headlines and gained world attention. Although there is now general recognition that the Horn of Africa is of strategic significance and that area control is in dispute between the superpowers, still lacking is basic understanding of the reasons for the long continuing regional instability. The author, in an attempt to rectify this unacceptable gap in general knowledge, provides a rare insight into the multiplicity of factors which have resulted in almost continuous local hostilities.
