Title:
Certification of Composite Aircraft Sturctures Under Impact, Fatigue and Environmental Conditions. Part I. Low Speed Impact of Plates of Composite Materials
Corporate Author:
DREXEL UNIV PHILADELPHIA PA
Report Date:
1978-01-01
Abstract:
This report presents a series of design curves which give the peak strain in several types of simple structures beams and plates due to low velocity impact. These curves have been developed based on both analytical solutions of impact and numerous impact experiments. It is shown that all impact problems may be divided into two regimes based on the ratio of the mass of the structure to the mass of the impactor. For large impactors multiple impacts occur and the structural response depends chiefly on the kinetic energy of the impactor. For small impactors only a single impact occurs. Its force and duration determined chiefly by contact effects and the impactor momentum governs the response. Thus different forms of design curves are required for each regime.
