Abstract:

Based on an error analysis of unattended ground sensor operator target detection data, a self-paced training program was developed to reduce the frequency and magnitude of operator errors and increase target detection rate. The first training unit dealt with solitary targets--only one vehicle or vehicle convoy traveling through the grid. The second dealt with target clusters-- several vehicles or vehicle convoys traveling through the grid at one time. To assess the value of training a pre-posttest design was used. Operators monitored for 2 hours activation data from seismic sensors employed in a grid, received the special training, and again monitored for 2 hours. The two monitoring periods were counterbalanced to control for differences in the target activation data. Four workload levels numbers of targets activating the sensors were used to ascertain training effects across a range of workloads typical of operational conditions. The self-paced training program resulted in improved operator performance in target detection and target speed and direction estimation accuracy on both practical and statistical significance. Target detection improved from 58 to 79, averaged over all conditions. Target detection after training averaged 61, 66, 94 and 97 for the four workload conditions 27, 15, 8, and 5 targetshour. Speed and direction estimation improved by 23 and 20 respectively as a result of training. The false alarm rate was negligible under all conditions. Conclusions and recommendations for the implementation of this training program and for utilization of grid deployment are provided.
