Abstract:

Bird use of dredged material islands in five areas of Florida was studied. The use of these islands by birds, particularly by colonial nesting sea and wading birds, was documented with two visits to each of 40 selected islands in five study areas in 1977. The islands were used as nesting habitat by 26 species of colonial and 8 species of noncolonial birds. The islands were also used extensively for feeding, loafing, and roosting by these and other species. Various species-habitat interactions and the significance of dredged material islands to colonial nesting sea and wading birds are discussed in detail. Author
