Abstract:
Jet transport airplane rejected takeoffs RTOs at heavy weights and high speeds and RTO accidentsincidents involving tires, wheels, and brakes have prompted an assessment of RTO test procedures and the system by which RTO accountability is achieved for day-to-day operations. It is concluded that 3 to 4 of air carrier accidents, fatalities, and aircraft losses can be attributed to tirewheelbrake related RTOs. Tire failures and the lack of accountability for the increased accelerate-stop distance required on wetslippery runways are significant factors. Recommendations are made for reducing the incidence of tire failures and accounting for the increased accelerate-stop distance necessitated by wetslippery runways. Author
