Title:
A Shipboard Oil-In-Water Content Monitor Based on Oil Fluorescence.

Report Date:

Abstract:
The purpose of this effort was to demonstrate the feasibility of a shipboard oil monitor based on the luminescence of oils emulsified in water. Luminescence characteristics of thirty non-Navy and eleven Navy oils and oil mixtures were documented as the basis of design for an instrument which performs a weighted sum of emission at several wavelengths when excited at several wavelengths. Effects of salinity, temperature, pH, particulates, detergents, and energy transfer between oils were demonstrated. The breadboard demonstrated linearity with concentration of better than 5 from 10-100 ppm. While feasibility has been documented, several areas of improvement are suggested, including better emulsification, improved optical mask design, a transmission monitor and a high-level bypass monitor.
