Abstract:

Computer programs for detecting syntactic boundaries BOUND3 and locating stressed syllables STRESS have been supplied to ARPA contractors. Descriptions of the operation and performance of these programs are provided, and suggestions for further improvements in these programs are given. Experiments were conducted on various timing cues that correlate with phonological and syntactic phrase boundaries. Further experiments are planned, dealing with carefully controlled studies of how prosodic information gives cues to the type of sentence spoken, the appropriate syntactic bracketing to assign, and the occurrence of subordination. Further studies of the BOUND3 and STRESS programs will be conducted, and improved versions of those prosodic analysis programs will be used to aid parsing and word matching in ARPA speech understanding systems.
