Abstract:

The report covers the development of a parallel-channel detection system PCDS for use in low light level spectroscopy. The PCDS consists of a three-stage image intensifier and an image isocon television camera. Fiber-optics coupling of the image intensifier to the camera and careful video processing have yielded quantum-limited sensitivity. Modifications to the basic detector have resulted in improvements in resolution, uniformity, and dynamic range. The data acquisition time for the current PCDS is approximately 1001 less than that of a conventional photomultiplier tube detector. Tests are being conducted in order to completely characterize the operation of the PCDS and further improve its performance.
