Abstract:
This Perspective provides a framework to guide policymakers in understanding the succession to Russian President Vladimir Putin, in whatever form it takes. The Perspective looks at the key political, economic, and social factors that could have an impact on any Russian succession and the possible role of key Russian stakeholders. It contains are view of a variety of succession scenarios presents, in broad terms, the history and implications of past Russian presidential successions for the United States and provides suggestions for successfully managing a Russian transition. This Perspective was largely written before the coronavirus disease 2019 COVID-19 pandemic but has been updated to reflect the effect of the pandemic so far. Many uncertainties remain.
