Abstract:

U.S. Department of Homeland Security DHS employees support the departments vital mission of keeping the nation secure and aretasked with preventing terrorist attacks, securing the nations borders, responding to natural disasters, and many other critical duties. Due tothe nature of these jobs, many DHS employees face a range of work-related stressors that may put them at risk for developing psychologicalhealth problems. In response, DHS has developed and implemented a number of programs designed to promote resilience, offer peer support, and prevent psychological health problems among its staff. Most of these programs are administered by the component agencies within DHS however, there is no central repository of information about the nature of these programs, their program elements, or their effectiveness. To address this gap, the DHS Office of Health Affairs asked the RAND Corporation to describe the evidence base for workplace psychological health programs and identify existing programs that address psychological health, peer support, and resilience across DHS components. This report presents the findings from that analysis, which will be of interest not only to the DHS Office of Health Affairs but also to other government offices responsible for employee health and well-being.
