Abstract:
This thesis examines the role of the military in the radicalization of Ecuador and Venezuela. Specifically, the research explores Bolivarianismo and Socialism for the 21st Century and the impact these ideologies have had on the military in each country. The thesis provides an overview of the history of civil-military relations in Ecuador and Venezuela from colonial independence to 2013. The thesis examines the history of the civil-military relationship in Ecuador and Venezuela the formation of the military in each country and the lessons learned from each experience of radicalization. In addition, Professor John Samuel Fitchs four formal roles of the armed forces professionalist, constitutionalist, arbiter, and developmentalist are used to analyze the role of the military in Ecuador and Venezuela both historically, and during the period of radicalization from the 1990s to the mid-2000s.
