Abstract:
Purpose. Acute lung injury ALI is recognized in 30 of combat casualties. Inflammation is a key component in ALI and therapeutic strategies to block inflammation are expected to decrease morbiditymortality. Investigations directed at ways to limit activation and tissue accumulation of leukocytes at sites of inflammation may prove to be clinically effective. ScopeAims. Specific approaches directed to target neutrophil and monocytemacrophage activity, the effector cells of the innate immune system, may be a novel approach to diminish inflammation-induced disease processes without interfering with other immunologic activity, thereby avoiding adverse side effects. Innovative BioTherapies has developed an approach, known as selective cytopheretic device SCD therapy Rx, in an effort to address this large unmet medical need.
