Abstract:

Essentially all fiber lasers in use today are made of glass. These glass structures normally involve a double-clad structure in which the core glass has been doped with a variety of rare-earth ions notably ytterbium which yields ytterbium-doped fiber lasers YDFL. Yet there are some limitations to power scaling of glass fiberlasers which result from laser induced damage to the small cores, nonlinear effects such as stimulated Brillouin scattering SBS, and thermal loading.
