Abstract:

The wave of popular unrest sweeping the Middle East in the last months hasraised the hope that countries in the region will embrace democracy and the stateswill become more peaceful and prosperous. Yet neither democracy nor stablepeace is certain in the region. Although democracy and peaceful stability tend tobe associated,i the processes leading to consolidated democracy are both uncertainand volatile. In fact, the process of democratization almost universally leadsto short- and medium-term instability and conflict. This piece offers some thoughtsfor considering the prospects for democratization and stability in the region.
