Abstract:

The Jones Act refers to Section 27 of the Merchant Marine Act of 1920 46 U.S.C. 55102 19 CFR 4.80, 4.80a and 4.80b which limits domestic maritime commerce to United States U.S. registered, owned, built, and crewed vessels. Maintaining a domestically controlled merchant marine is essential to both the nations economic prosperity and defense interests. The Jones Act remains a contemporary and controversial economic issue with direct linkage to U.S. national defense objectives. The following independent analysis will provide evidence supporting the Jones Act as the best economic alternative and a critical component of U.S. national security because of its contribution towards domestic security, power projection, and leveraging of commercial partnership.
