Abstract:

On 4 October of last year, local militants friendly to the Islamic State ambushed a small American military unit outside a remote West African village. The incident left four Americans and five others dead and sparked a public debate on the merits of deploying U.S. forces to remote corners of the world to conduct obscure missions that the public rarely hears of and where the strategic importance may not be as clear to the general public as conducting counterterrorism operations in the deserts of Syria or Libya.
