Abstract:

The project addressed the question how can quantum optics techniques be translated to improve the performance of biological microscopy It developed two new approaches to microscopy, improving the precision of both optical tweezers based rheological measurements, and of near-field single molecule sensing. In doing this, the project demonstrated, for the first time, the dramatic improvements that quantum techniques make possible, showing orders of magnitude improvements in both measurement speed and required illumination intensities. 8 peer reviewed papers and 3 conference proceedings were a direct result of the funding.
