Abstract:

The SST electrical power system was tested to establish the validity of the choice of the variable-speed, constant-frequency VSCF approach to the power generation system and to establish the fail-operative capability of the primary and standby systems for the prototype SST. The tests were conducted in the Boeing Commercial Airplane Company electrical laboratory. Test results showed that the quality of power produced by a VSCF system is equivalent to that produced by a conventional aircraft generatordrive system, that the endurance capability after in-test modification of the system is acceptable, and that the system design meets the requirement for fail-operative power to support flight-critical loads. Conclusions are that the testing and subsequent design changes to the VSCF equipment have done much to eliminate the risk factor associated with the application of VSCF to new aircraft design.
