Abstract:

Aluminum-brazed titanium honeycomb sandwich developed for the SST prototype had specific process limits primarily due to lack of development time available. Designs were limited to light-gauge, constant-thickness panels with minimum core densities of 5 lbcu ft. Process research and development work was conducted on the DOTSST Phase II technology follow-on program to a extend the process to lower core densities and greater core depths, b investigate new braze alloys, core materials and configurations, c refine cleaning procedures, d develop techniques for improving quality of faying-surface brazements, e establish procedures for post-braze welding of sandwich assemblies, f develop brazing of curved and wedge configurations, and g determine feasibility of fabricating acoustic sandwich structure. Results of this program provide a more comprehensive understanding of process criteria for aluminum-brazed titanium honeycomb sandwich structure. Procedures were established for fabricating sandwich panels with core densities down to 1.6 lbcu ft and core depths up to 3 in. A unique rotating retort method was utilized for curved configurations. Techniques were developed for wedge-shape configurations, faying-surface braze joints, and post-braze welding. The feasibility of single and multilayer acoustic sandwich was demonstrated. Processes established by this program were utilized for fabricating test hardware for related development work. Author
