Abstract:

A recently patented device for propelling a projectile at high velocity in which the projectile is imbedded paraffin filling a conical void at one end of a solid cylindrical explosive is analyzed. The analysis assumes that a plane detonation wave moving in the explosive is shaped by a wave-reversing disk into a conical wave as it impinges onto the parafin cone. The pressure in the flow induced in the paraffin behind a conical shock refracted into it is calculated and a simplified formula is written for the velocity to which this flow accelerates the projectile. A more refined analysis attempts to take into account the conical nature of this flow and uses for this purpose the axially-symmetric conical flow equations as written by Birkhoff and Walsh. Author
