Abstract:
The purpose of this program was to develop a second-generation water treatment unit that would treat liquid wastes except human from the MUST Hospital and produce 1 water, safe for ground discharge, and 2 potable water. As the previous flotation system exhibited problems, electrochemical, ultrafiltration, and reverse-osmosis units were investigated for primary treatment application. The electrochemical unit evinced difficulty in controlling current flow the ultrafilters developed severe fouling problems the reverse-osmosis system proved satisfactory, even after repeated treatment of raw wastes, to the extent of producing a 95-percent product recovery. The organic breakthrough that evolved with the reverse-osmosis system was treated with activated carbon for partial success. When ozonation was added as a final step for removing the organic materials, the product water purification increased to a high of 95 percent. Author
