Report Date:

Abstract:
Single-heterostructure SH lasers have been improved by the reduction of turn-on delays and degradation problems. The emission beam angle of large-optical-cavity LOC lasers has been reduced from approx 60 deg. to 35 deg., the array-emission angle required for this contract. Fiber-optic ribbons of 1-mil- and 3-mil-square glass fibers were evaluated and found to differ greatly in their ability to transmit light from SH lasers of larger than average beam width. The first laser module was fabricated and tested. It emitted 24 watts peak power, with 60 of the energy contained in a 35 deg. beam. The 8400 A emitted power dropped by 16 at a 5-kHz repetition rate.
