Abstract:
An experimental 1029 line TV camera equipped with a pinhole lens was tested to 1 Determine the cameras performance 2 Compare its performance with analytically determined values and 3 Determine its value as a low cost optional probe for 2-D and 3-D visual simulation. The test measurements show that, while an exceptional depth of field and linearity exists from 14 inch to infinity, with a 100 degree wide FOV, the resolution is limited to 500 TV linespicture height. System noise at moderate light levels and optical probe ground clearance are limiting features. No successful solutions to improving ground clearance and reducing the form factor to that of a complex lens probe are presently apparent. The recommendation is that work be discontinued on the TV Pinhole Camera until the need for a low cost, limited resolution, optical probe with a great depth of field and wide field angle arise.
