Abstract:

Based upon crack propagation and impact element tests, high strength steel claddings were selected as a means of mollifying the brittle characteristics of beryllium sheet. The cladding concept was incorporated into a honeycomb sandwich and an integrally stiffened diffusion bonded panel. Spectrum tests of precracked panels revealed the honeycomb concept to be the most damage tolerant. A trade study comparison showed the beryllium steel cladded designs to be significantly lower in weight than configurations of steel and titanium. The cladding did not impose any significant weight penalty. An epoxy adhesive with a glass fiber carrier was used for the nonmetallic cladding joint.
