Abstract:

This report covers the preliminary design and performance characteristics of a unique method and device for the application of microwave energy to the drying of photographic materials. The method utilizes a parallel plate chamber design and a tuned or resonant system. The dryer was tested in the Air Force Avionics Laboratory. The microwave principle has been demonstrated to be an effective film drying method when properly applied and adjusted. The advantages of a microwave dryer are 1 uniformity of drying 2 efficient use of microwave energy 3 compatible size and 4 adaptability. The use of microwave energy for film drying will provide the photographic community with a new tool which permits film processing at any speed which the chemical development and fixing may dictate.
