Abstract:

A Low Drag Sensor capable of differentiating between captured and free-fall flight of a munition was developed during this program. The Low Drag Sensor can be self-contained within an electromechanical bomb fuze, does not require inputs external to the fuze, and will comply with the design objective when the fuze is installed in either the nose or tail well of a high or low drag, high-explosive, general-purpose bomb. The key component of the Low Drag Sensor is an inertial sensor that recognizes the forces acting on the munition during captured and free-fall flight. This component, when used in conjunction with its associated electronic logic network, permits arm-enablement after the fuze has been initiated only if the munition has been released from the aircraft and is in free-fall flight. Arming will not occur should the munition remain attached to the aircraft. Laboratory temperature extreme tests and captured and free-fall flight tests demonstrated that the Low Drag Sensor can reliably and safely differentiate between these two environments.
