Abstract:

A formulation for a multipurpose 5 mil thick protective film was developed. The polyvinyl chloride film has optical densities in excess of 4 at 332, 337, 488, 515, 533, 694, 840-900, and 1060 nm. The luminous visual TRANSMITTANCE OF THE FILM IS 24-26. Migration of absorbers from this new film has been reduced from that observed in the earlier LPA-30 film produced under Contract No. DA-36038-AMC-4287A. The formulation should be capable of being readily produced on commercial film manufacturing equipment if the need arises for larger quantities. An investigation was conducted into the effects of matrix interactions which might influence the absorption band, shape, intensity and position when the absorbers were placed in a host material suitable for practical application. These studies included interaction effects due to the plastic, plastic modifiers such as plasticizers, heat stabilizers, uv stabilizers and other co- absorbing species. Outdoor aging studies on some selected laser protective materials are reported. Author, modified-PL
