Report Date:

Abstract:
The project was undertaken to provide the Air Force with guidance in handling highly toxic plating wastes generated by aircraft maintenance activities at bases around the world. The original scope of the project included a survey and testing methods of plating waste treatment for safe disposal, selection of the best method or methods, and a systematic study of the whole problem confronting the Air Force. Project fund reductions diminished the scope of the project to a detailed analysis of the electrolytic oxidation method of plating waste treatment. The report also contains preliminary testing of other treatment methods, analytical methods of cyanide determination, and a survey of plating wastes generated at Air Force bases. Electrolytic oxidation was found to be unacceptable as a treatment method of Metex strip wastes. An extensive series of tests was performed to arrive at this conclusion. Author
