Abstract:
A series of lithium-initiated hydroxy terminated polybutadiene prepolymers were prepared and tested to determine the effects of increasing difunctionality on the properties of high solids propellants. These prepolymers were prepared by successive fractionation of a parent prepolymer on silica gel, and contained 65, 80, 85, 90 and 97 difunctional species. All contained substantial amounts of silicon and iron and all were filtered to reduce the concentrations of these impurities to acceptable levels. Rate studies made of the NCO-OH reaction indicated that homopolymerization was also eliminated as the sole cause of crosslinking by the fact that azelaoyl chloride, which does not polymerize, caused formation of gel in one of the prepolymers. Binders and propellant studies were made using the curing agent hexane diisocyanateHDI and when needed, the crosslinker polyaryl polyisocyanate. The binder studies allowed a determination of the effective functionalities of the prepolymers. Considerable characterization of propellants made with the prepolymers was done. Author
