Abstract:
A modified, resistance heated, all-metal furnace has been successfully used to grow core free rubies by the Czochralski technique. These crystals are suitable for laser applications. Rods up to 3 inches long and up to 12 inch diameter have been fabricated. The effective distribution coefficient for chromium oxide in this system is determined to be 0.75 plus or minus 0.05.
