Abstract:
The report covers a manufacturing program for the production of thin wall, hollow structural and airfoil shapes. Material shape combinations of four alloys Type 304 Stainless Steel, Hastelloy X, Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-3Al-2.5 and three configurations airfoil, balanced angle and unbalanced angle were investigated. Starting material, tool design and processing parameters were established for Form Rolling close tolerance net shapes from welded tubing of .010 in. and .025 in. wall thickness. Shapes were produced in a two high variable speed rolling mill using a solid mandrel for internal support. Shapes produced exhibited less than 116 in. camber and less than 2 degree twist per foot of length. The surface finish of every length was identical to that of the starting material in the range of 10 to 40 RMS. Since no measurable reduction was imparted to the tubing wall, and no in-process heating was used the mechanical and metallurgical properties of the starting material were unaffected. Dimensional variations were held to less than plus or minus 5 except in the case of the titanium alloys where spring-back resulted in shape distortion. Author
