Abstract:

The rates and reaction mechanism of hydrocarbon oxidation on Pt electrodes in hot 130C concentrated 80 and higher H3PO4 have been investigated. Half-cell tests with platinized Pt and fuel cell electrodes have been performed to verify the previously observed enhancement of C3H8 oxidation and O2 reduction rates in the presence of cationic additives to the electrolyte. With Ni2, the increased rate of C3H8 oxidation and increase in active life of the fuel cell electrode previously reported have been verified in a configuration where there is no ambiguity about the effective electrode area. With 130 mM Na, the maximum increase in the reduction rate of O2 was 213 at 0.80 V. Thus the increased rate of O2 reduction reported previously has been verified. Studies of the adsorption of C3H8 on Pt in the presence of Na and Ni2 have indicated that the mechanism by which C3H8 oxidation is enhanced involves a decrease in the amount of CH-alpha, the surface species which is thought to inhibit the main oxidation path of the C3H8 to CO2 reaction, in the potential range studied.
