Abstract:
The ultimate objective of this project is the development of a zero-g fuel gauging system based on the absorption of gamma radiation. Fundamental to the envisioned system is the radiation detector itself. Of the materials known today, the inherent properties and thermal stability of Cadmium Telluride CdTe make it the superior candidate for meeting the requirements of the envisioned gauging system. The first task, therefore, was to evaluate quantitatively the performance of various CdTe devices as gamma ray detectors over a wide range of temperature -430 to 150F and bias voltage 0 to 150 vdc under laboratory conditions. A test program was devised and sufficient data were generated to adjudge that detectors fabricated from CdTe representing the material technology of over one year ago would be marginally acceptable for the proposed application because of the relatively heavy trapping experienced.
