Abstract:
A study was conducted to investigate the relationships between various aspects of cockpit motion and pilot performance. The task of landing approach was carried out by experienced pilots both in the simulator and in the aircraft. The results of the experiment indicated that both experimental apparatus and design variables operated to limit the conclusions to be drawn from the study comparisons between pilot performance in the simulator and the actual aircraft were possible but not meaningfully related to the experimental questions and with respect to the test of the relationships between pilot performance and variations in the motion characteristics, meaningful conclusions were not possible because of experimental apparatus and design difficulties. The study provided valuable knowledge for definition and quantification of simulator motion which should prove useful in future investigations of the effect of simulator motion upon performance and transfer of training.
