GENERAL ELECTRIC CO CINCINNATI OH AIRCRAFT ENGINE TECHNICAL DIV
The report discusses research to develop the technology, advance the design concepts, and manufacture composite compressor blades. The composite material consisted of a 2024 aluminum alloy matrix reinforced with boron filament AlB. Material evaluation by tensile, shear, torsion, creep, fatigue, and wear led to the design allowables. Detailed analysis of the aerodynamic and aeromechanical responses under the strenuous axial-compressor environmental conditions evolved a useful composite blade design. Simultaneously, the material development resulted in scaled-up techniques for accurately and reliably consolidating AlB blades. In conjunction with this effort, foreign object damage FOD evaluation led to the identification of an integral wire mesh protection system. Protected and unprotected blades were installed in an advanced design compressor Direct Lift Device vehicle and subjected to stall, sand erosion, and FOD. The program showed, except for a slight erosion deficiency that the AlB can out-perform existing compressor blade material. Volume I reports on the manufacturing of the blades and their design.
