Abstract:
With the aid of a numerical program, many problems are solved in which dilatational waves are propagated through a regular plate-gap material. A regular plate-gap material is herein defined as one in which numerous identical plates are separated by equal-sized gaps before loading. Based on the macroscopic behavior observed in these problems, one-dimensional mathematical models for continuous materials which have essentially the same macroscopic response under the same impulsive loading are proposed. These material models are proposed to account for the effects on ground-motion calculations of jointing, faulting, or other unfilled discontinuities which are present in in situ rock but absent in laboratory material tests.
