Abstract:
The report describes the design and manufacturing phases of a development program for a 120-Degree Wide Angle Mapping Camera Lens. During the design period, nine different optical designs were calculated. Three were prime candidates for the desired system. A very thorough analysis of these three systems with regard to performance versus manufacturability produced a final lens configuration which at the end of the design phase appeared to meet all resolution, distortion, and other specification requirements. It was an all spherical design. During the testing an anomoly showed up in the form of a double image at the 52-12 degree off-axis position. A substantial effort was made to see if it were possible to design this problem out of the lens while preserving the existing elements and the cell. A solution was derived which involved minor changes in the curves on four surfaces and the addition of a mild aspheric on a fifth surface. This modification had the added benefit of reducing the distortion on paper to about 10 microns, well below the specified 40 microns. Author
