Abstract:
The Bureau of Naval Weapons is developing a small radio-controlled helicopter DSN-3 for antisubmarine warfare. The DSN-3, will operate from a landing-platform on a surface ship DD, and will be sent out when sonar contact is made with an enemy submarine. The helicopter will be controlled from the deck of the destroyer. When tracking radar and sonar positions coincide, the weapon a Mk 44 torpedo, Mk 46 torpedo, or Mk 57 nuclear depth charge is armed and dropped. At this time, the DSN-3 returns to the destroyer.
