Abstract:

The report describes the subjective layer depth LD analysis technique utilized by the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office NAVOCEANO. The subjective LD analysis evolved from a smoothed approach during the initial phase 1959 of ASWEPS to the present chart showing relatively complex features. The smoothed technique was initially followed because of sparse bathythermograph BT data and lack of an analysis model. Although the number of BT observations has tripled since that time to about 80 reports per day, development of an empirical model to relate layer depth patterns to patterns of sea surface temperature for which relatively abundant data are available proved to be the principal factor in increasing the utility of the layer depth analysis. Parts of the subjective analysis thus developed also have applications to objective techniques. Author
