Title:

Abstract:
The objective of this effort was to design a signal structure which would support the integration of the Communication, Navigation, and Identification functions now being performed by separate signals and equipment. Various waveforms which had the potential for providing the capability of supporting the C, N, and I functions in a single waveform were investigated. The approach taken in the study was to perform parametric analyses of the waveform performance without postulating numerical values for key system parameters. This approach provides system planner performance curves and tradeoff data to enable quantitive evaluation and comparison of waveform performance designed to meet a specific requirement. A firm conclusion of the study was that a hybrid waveform utilizing time division, code division, and frequency hopping has the greatest potential for satisfying the system requirements of an eventual, full-capacity system. A tradeoff analysis and detailed engineering design of a state-of-the-art system which utilizes a 10 MHz bandwidth was also performed in the study. The waveform used in the state-of-the-art design has the same basic structure as that recommended for the full capacity system. The major recommendation, a result of the study, is that a system study should be performed to define an ICNI system and its detailed requirements. Author
