Abstract:

The report describes the work done on developing a hardened lithium doped PN silicon solar cell. Part I includes studies of the solar cell, the method of depositing an integral cover, the method of interconnecting cells, the design of a flexible array and the design of a solar cell automatic test system. Hardened lithium solar cell performance characteristics 10 to 12 efficiencies were shown to be similar to conventional NP solar cells. Methods for reliably interconnecting the cells with a wraparound interconnector and mounting the cells on a flexible substrate are presented. An ultrasonic bonding technique was developed which provided a solderless method for bonding the interconnector metal tabs to the solar cell. Experiments showed that hardened cells and complete arrays were thermal cycled from -196C to 400C without failure. Author
