Abstract:

A study is made on the problem of adverse yaw due to roll rate for a high performance fighter aircraft in a combat cruise configuration. A performance index is developed to eliminate this problem and to improve the lateral stability of the aircraft. The theory of multivariable frequency domain optimization is explained and a computational algorithm is given. This algorithm is then applied to the problem at hand, and one iteration is performed. Time histories of the bare airframe and the airframe with the optimum open loop controller are compared, and a significant reduction in adverse yaw can be seen. Author
