Abstract:
Task Area 74 - bounded by latitudes 32 degrees N and 48 degrees N, the Mid-Atlantic ridge on the east, and longitude 57 degrees W - contains a bottom morphology characteristic of much of the Atlantic. South of the Grand Banks, abyssal-plain development is extensive east of the Grand Banks, the deep-ocean basin has not been leveled to abyssal-plain gradients there, the lower continental rise extends to the abyssal-hills province. The Mid-Atlantic ridge occupies the eastern half of the survey area, trending NE-SW to the Azores Islands, where it changes direction to north. There is a zone of weakness between the Grand Banks and the Azores the Southeast Newfoundland ridge lies along this zone. The extension of this zone southeast from the ridge contains bathymetric and magnetic expressions which suggest a major fracture zone. Depth and topography control sediment distribution in Area 74 the nearshore basins receive large accumulations of terrigenous sediments, whereas the areas far removed from the continents receive primarily pelagic products.
