Abstract:

The Debye temperature of ZnSe was calculated using neutron diffraction. Using neutrons of 1.89A wavelength, the diffraction data of the 111, 220, 311, 400, 313, and 224 Bragg peaks of ZnSe powder were obtained. Neglecting thermal diffuse scattering, the integrated intensities of these peaks were converted to an absolute scale using Ni powder as a standard. With the assumption that the zinc and selenium atoms vibrate with the same reduced mass, the Debye-Waller factor and hence the Debye temperature was computed. A value of 260 plus or minus 25 degrees K was obtained. The effect of using a mean mass in calculation of the Debye temperature is also discussed. Author
